Who They Are & What They Do
Since its founding on St. David’s Day, 1st March 2001, Wales Air Ambulance has completed over 50,000 missions, responding to over 3,500 emergencies every year. With a fleet of helicopters and rapid response vehicles, the service brings hospital-level emergency care directly to the patient, often in remote or hard-to-reach areas. Their ability to perform advanced medical procedures – such as blood transfusions, anaesthesia, and emergency surgery – at the scene of an incident can mean the difference between life and death.
This pan-Wales service operates from multiple bases across the country, ensuring they can reach those in need as quickly as possible. Their teams of highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners, in partnership with the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS), provide world-class, time-critical care that saves lives every single day.

A message from Wales Air Ambulance Chief Executive, Dr Sue Barnes said:
“We mark this milestone with huge gratitude – we are truly humbled. This would not have been possible without the continued support and dedication of our supporters, volunteers, employees, medics, pilots and engineers – past and present.
Behind each mission, there are human stories. On 50,000 occasions, the medics on board our vehicles have been tasked to help someone in need. When past patients and their families visit us, they often bring their family and friends – sometimes their young children. At that point, you realise that the impact of our charity is far greater than just the patient themselves. We have also impacted the lives of their family and friends who, without our service, may never have been reunited with their loved ones.
“We are also immensely grateful to those individuals and organisations we work alongside in the chain of emergency care. This includes Wales Air Ambulance Service and Welsh health boards, as well as fellow emergency services across the country.”
A Charity That Relies On You
Unlike government-funded emergency services, Wales Air Ambulance is entirely funded by charitable donations. It takes £11.2 million every year to keep their helicopters flying and rapid response vehicles on the road. Without public support, this lifesaving service simply wouldn’t be possible.
